John Paul McGuire was a primary caregiver for his father-in-law during his ALS journey. When he lost the ability to speak they assumed this was coupled with a cognitive decline. A speech therapist introduced JP’s father-in-law to eye gaze technology on a communication device. Almost immediately, he produced a sizable chunk of the Declaration of Independence, showing JP and his family that he was 'still in there' and could understand what we had been saying. On that day I decided to become a speech therapist.

JP also says that his kids keep him busy and being a Dad is his favorite thing in the world.
