Team Feature: Melissa Sander, OT
This month, we are featuring team member Melissa Sander, Occupational Therapist!
Melissa received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from and her Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, both from UNLV. She worked as a psychosocial rehabilitation practitioner before becoming the Direct Supervisor and Administrative Director for a Las Vegas mental health agency that specializes in treating the mental health diagnoses of adults and youth in the Juvenile Justice System. To further advance her professional goals, Melissa decided to attend Touro University Nevada, where she received a Doctorate degree in Occupational Therapy. Melissa worked in the mental and behavioral health field for at least seven years before pursuing her career in Occupational Therapy.
Originally, Melissa was drawn to the Occupational Therapy profession after wanting to play a more active therapeutic role in working with adolescents and adults with varying mental and physical health issues. She is drawn most to the holistic nature of Occupational Therapy and how it encompasses all areas of health and wellness. Melissa’s doctoral capstone was a program development of an art activities program. She created a program manual as well as a burnout guide for both students and practitioners to use.
Melissa enjoys arts and crafts and previously created an arts activities program to promote occupational balance, enhance leisure participation, and collect art/school supplies for families in low-income communities. In her free time, she enjoys watercoloring painting, baking, traveling, outdoor activities, and spending time with her husband and daughter. Melissa also likes to read books/watch movies of fantasy fiction and mystery thrillers.
Originally, Melissa is from New Jersey but has lived in Las Vegas, NV for over 15 years. She most enjoys the mountains and the surrounding valley of the area. Melissa is passionate about learning, community service, and the importance of self-care.
