ADLs Chore Card Challenge

Our ADLs Chore Card Challenge is a card-based activity for adults focusing on some of the things occupational therapists work on with individuals. This game helps adults practice and improve their everyday functional skills and independence through developing and managing a routine for their regular chores.

Instructions:

  1. Print Cards: Print our downloadable cards (from our mobile app) and cut each out to form your deck.

  2. Draw a Task: Each day, draw a card from the deck. The card will display an everyday chore that you need to complete that day. Alternatively, you can decide in advance which tasks will be done on each day.

  3. Perform the Chore: The individual should attempt to perform the task described on the card. If necessary, they may need to make adjustments or receive assistance to complete the chore effectively.

  4. Time Challenge: Add an extra challenge by timing how long it takes to complete each task. Set a goal to improve completion times with practice.

  5. Review: After each task, think about or write down some strategies, adaptations, and challenges faced while completing the chore.

  6. Develop a Routine: Use the cards each week to start to develop an easy to manage routine to keep all household chores completed and your home in order!

Developmental Benefits:

  • Functional Independence: Helps adults practice essential everyday tasks to maintain or improve independence.

  • Adaptive Techniques: Encourages the development of adaptive techniques to overcome physical or cognitive challenges.

  • Problem-Solving: Fosters problem-solving skills by finding the most efficient ways to complete tasks.

  • Self-Esteem: Boosts self-esteem and confidence by achieving success in everyday activities.

These activities offer a playful and practical way for anyone to engage and improve their daily functional skills.
