Story Starter Jar

Playing this game is a great way for anyone to improve creativity, critical thinking, and storytelling skills by using a prompt.

 
 

You’ll need:

  • Printed story prompts

  • Scissors

  • A jar, container, or box to store the story prompts

  • Optional: colored markers or pencils for decorating the story prompts or the container

Instructions:

  1. Cut the story prompts: Carefully cut out each story prompt.

  2. Optional - Decorate the prompts: Encourage participants to color or decorate the story prompts using markers or pencils, adding their own personal touch.

  3. Prepare the Story Starter Jar: Fold the story prompts twice and place them inside the container you have prepared.

  4. Introduce the activity: Explain to the participants that they will be using the Story Starter Jar to inspire creative storytelling and develop their critical thinking skills.

  5. Play the game: Have players take turns picking a story prompt from the jar. They must then begin a story using the prompt and continue building an imaginative narrative.

  6. Observe how participants use their creativity and critical thinking skills to develop unique stories with detail!

Variations:

  • Have players take turns picking prompts and adding sentences to create a complete group story.

  • Introduce a time limit where participants must think quickly and build their story within a given timeframe.
